New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially announced the schedule for the upcoming Vice Presidential election. The ECI press note outlines that nomination papers must be submitted to the Returning Officer (RO) or Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) at Room No. RS-28, First Floor, Parliament House. Candidates can file their nominations from 11 AM to 3 PM on any working day, no later than August 21, 2025.
A security deposit of ₹15,000 is required, which can be paid either in cash with the RO or deposited in the Reserve Bank of India or a government treasury. Nomination papers must also be accompanied by:
A certified copy of the electoral roll entry showing the candidate’s registration as an elector for a Parliamentary constituency.
A receipt for the security deposit.
The scrutiny of nominations will take place on August 22 at 11 AM in Room No. F-100, Sangoshthi-2, First Floor, Parliament House.
The last date to withdraw a candidature is August 25, 2025.
The counting of votes will be conducted on the same day as polling—September 9, 2025.
This election was necessitated by the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down from the post of Vice President on July 21, the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, citing health reasons.
In his resignation letter, Dhankhar wrote, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”
The ECI’s notification formally sets the process in motion for electing India’s new Vice President.
