SC Issues Notice to Unitech’s Promoter Sanjay Chandra

Last year, the ED arrested Ramesh Chandra, the founder of Unitech Group, along with Preeti Chandra and Rajesh Malik of Carnoustie Group.

New Delhi (Agency): The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to Preeti Chandra, the wife of former Unitech promoter Sanjay Chandra, in response to an Enforcement Directorate (ED) plea challenging the Delhi High Court's decision to grant her bail in a money laundering case.

A vacation bench comprising Justices Hima Kohli and Rajesh Bindal temporarily stayed the Delhi High Court's order granting bail to Preeti Chandra. The court has asked her to file a reply to the ED's plea challenging the bail order.

The Enforcement Directorate has approached the apex court to challenge the Delhi High Court's decision to grant bail to Preeti Chandra in the money laundering case. Earlier this week, the Delhi High Court had granted bail to Preeti Chandra, who is the wife of former Unitech promoter Sanjay Chandra, in the money laundering case. However, at the request of the ED's counsel, the High Court had agreed to postpone the implementation of the bail order until Friday, as the ED intended to challenge it.

Last year, the ED arrested Ramesh Chandra, the founder of Unitech Group, along with Preeti Chandra and Rajesh Malik of Carnoustie Group. They were accused of collecting funds from homebuyers for housing projects but allegedly diverting the money for other purposes. Preeti Chandra had been denied bail by the trial court in November 2022.

According to the ED, Unitech Ltd., where Ramesh Chandra serves as the Chairman and Ajay Chandra and Sanjay Chandra are Directors, collected funds from homebuyers for housing projects. The ED's investigation focuses on alleged irregularities in the use of these funds.

The Supreme Court's notice to Preeti Chandra indicates that the legal proceedings in the money laundering case are ongoing, with the ED seeking to challenge her bail. The case has garnered significant attention due to its connection with the Unitech Group and the allegations of diverting funds meant for housing projects.
