India to commission MH 60R Seahawks into Navy, enhancing maritime security and operational capabilities.

Agency(New Delhi): Marking a significant milestone in India’s defense modernization, the Indian Navy is set to commission the MH 60R Seahawk helicopters into its fleet as the INAS 334 Squadron. This ceremony, scheduled for March 6, 2024, at INS Garuda in Kochi, signifies the addition of the maritime variant of the Blackhawk helicopter, bolstering the Navy’s multi-role capabilities. These helicopters form part of a 24-aircraft Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement concluded with the United States government in February 2020.

The induction of the MH 60R Seahawks represents a considerable enhancement in the Indian Navy’s maritime operational capability. Designed to perform a variety of roles including anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), search and rescue operations (SAR), medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), and vertical replenishment (VERTREP), these helicopters have undergone extensive testing under Indian Reference Atmosphere (IRA) conditions, ensuring full integration into the fleet. Their advanced weaponry, sensors, and avionics suite position the Seahawks as a crucial asset for addressing both conventional and asymmetric maritime security challenges.

The operational deployment of the MH 60R helicopters is expected to significantly extend the Indian Navy’s blue-water capabilities, enhancing its operational reach and ability to maintain sustained naval operations across broad maritime domains. By deploying these helicopters in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), the Indian Navy aims to fortify its maritime presence, deter potential threats, and ensure the safety and security of this strategically vital area.

The commissioning event underscores the Indian Navy’s unwavering commitment to strengthening maritime security. It aligns perfectly with the Government of India’s vision of ensuring “Security And Growth for All in the Region,” contributing to a safer and more secure maritime environment.
