“Extended Sugar Subsidy for AAY Families”

Cabinet approves the continuation of sugar subsidy for Antyodya Anna Yojana families under PDS until March 2026.

The Aryavarth Express
Agency(New Delhi): The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of the sugar subsidy scheme for families under the Antyodya Anna Yojana (AAY) distributed through the Public Distribution System (PDS). This extension is set for two more years, until 31 March 2026, reflecting the Central Government’s steadfast commitment to the welfare of the country’s citizens, especially the poorest.

This scheme aims to make sugar more accessible to the poorest segments of society, enhancing their dietary energy and contributing to improved health. The Central Government subsidizes sugar at the rate of Rs.18.50 per kg per month for each AAY family in participating states. The extension of this scheme is expected to offer benefits exceeding Rs.1850 crore during the period of the 15th Finance Commission (2020-21 to 2025-26). Approximately 1.89 crore AAY families across the country stand to benefit from this initiative.

In addition to this sugar subsidy, the Government of India continues to provide free rations under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY). The sale of ‘Bharat Atta’, ‘Bharat Dal’, and affordable tomatoes and onions are further steps to ensure adequate nutrition in the diets of Indian citizens. To date, about 3 lakh tons of Bharat Dal (Chana dal) and 2.4 lakh tons of Bharat Atta have been sold, benefiting the general populace. The availability of subsidized dal, atta, and sugar completes a nutritious dietary offering for common citizens, fulfilling Prime Minister Modi’s promise of ‘Food for All, Nutrition for All’.

With this approval, the government will maintain its subsidy to participating states for the distribution of sugar to AAY families via PDS at a rate of one kg per family per month. The states bear the responsibility for procuring and distributing the sugar, ensuring that this crucial dietary supplement reaches those in need.
