New Delhi: As investigations deepen into the tragic BMW accident near Dhaula Kuan, the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team on Tuesday visited the Delhi Cantt Police Station to examine the seized vehicle involved in the fatal crash.
FSL Scientific Officer Gaurav Ostwal stated that the team is conducting a detailed inspection of the car as per official protocols. “We are currently inspecting the car according to FSL protocols. A comprehensive analysis of dent and scratch marks will be carried out. Conclusions can only be drawn after the analysis is complete,” Ostwal told.
The accident, which occurred on September 14, claimed the life of Navjot Singh, Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. Singh was riding a two-wheeler with his wife when the BMW allegedly collided with them. His mortal remains were taken for final rites on Tuesday.
The accused driver, Gaganpreet Kaur, has been sent to two days of judicial custody. She has filed a bail application, arguing that the accident was unintentional and occurred without any criminal intent. Her counsel pointed out that Kaur is a mother of two minor daughters, has no prior criminal record, and also suffered a head injury during the incident.
The bail plea, filed under Section 480 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, contends that there is no need for custodial interrogation. It further notes Kaur’s full cooperation with the investigation, her strong societal ties, and low risk of fleeing or tampering with evidence.
On Monday, Duty Judicial Magistrate Akanksha Singh ordered Kaur into judicial custody after Delhi Police produced her at the judge’s residence. The court scheduled a hearing on her bail application for September 17 and directed jail authorities to provide her with necessary medical care.
Appearing for Kaur, Senior Advocate Vikas Pahwa and Advocate Prabhav Ralli opposed the police’s remand request, citing a 10-hour delay in the registration of the FIR. The victims were represented by Advocate Ishan Dewan.
Police have invoked charges under sections related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, among others. According to the prosecution, the BMW first hit a road divider and overturned, triggering a sequence of events that led to the victim’s motorcycle colliding with a DTC bus. Kaur, her family members, and the victims sustained injuries and were hospitalized before Kaur’s arrest on September 15.
She remains in judicial custody until her bail hearing on September 17.
