New Delhi: The Cyber Police Station of Delhi’s North District has uncovered an inter-state fraud network that duped people by posing as charity organizers and offering fake NGO registrations with promises of lucrative monthly returns. Three individuals from Agra, Uttar Pradesh, have been arrested in connection with the scam, police said on Thursday.
The investigation began after 76-year-old social worker Muhammad Yunus Khan from Delhi filed a complaint stating he had been cheated of ₹16,600. Khan said he received a WhatsApp call from an unknown person who claimed to be involved in charitable work for the poor and elderly. The caller persuaded him to donate and further lured him with an offer to start his own NGO under their scheme, promising a monthly income of ₹50,000 and additional benefits.
Believing the offer to be genuine, Khan transferred ₹16,600 as a registration and processing fee. However, once the payment was made, the fraudsters cut off all communication.
Based on Khan’s complaint, a case was registered on September 8, 2025, and investigators conducted detailed financial and technical analyses to trace the fraud. The probe led them to a bank account in Agra.
On October 11, police raided the location and arrested Manish Biswas (19), the account holder. During questioning, Biswas disclosed that he had been approached by two others — Manthan Kumar and Prince, also known as Kalu or Kamlesh — who had persuaded him to open the bank account under the guise of “reviving company funds.”
Following this lead, police nabbed Manthan Kumar, a trainee chef at a hotel in Agra. He admitted to acting as a middleman, sharing Biswas’s account details with Prince. Subsequently, Prince, a labourer, was also arrested. He confessed to arranging multiple “mule” bank accounts and revealed that he had passed Manish’s details to another suspect named Golu, who had promised him a commission.
Efforts are now underway to track down Golu, believed to be the main handler behind the operation, and recover the defrauded money, officials added.
