The Aryavarth Express:
New Delhi [India], March 12: Congress MP Rajani Patil on Thursday called for strict action following the attempted attack on National Conference President Farooq Abdullah, highlighting serious lapses in security.
Patil pointed out that Abdullah, a Z-plus security protectee, was still targeted, saying, “If there can be an attack on a Z-plus protectee, this reflects the poor state of security. We lost Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. Farooq Abdullah has played a major role in Jammu and Kashmir, and strict action must be taken in this case.”
Earlier, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari criticised the central government, holding the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Government of India accountable for security failures in Jammu and Kashmir. He noted, “In Kashmir, now a Union Territory, law and order fall directly under the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Lieutenant Governor. Security lapses like this are a complete failure of both authorities. Even after the removal of Article 370, terrorism persists and law and order has not improved. The Government of India has failed.”
Tiwari added, “Farooq Abdullah, his father Sheikh Abdullah, and current Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have served the people of the state with dedication and are widely respected. It is alarming how security measures failed in this instance. The central government and the Home Ministry are directly responsible.”
The attack took place at a wedding in Jammu’s Royal Park, Greater Kailash, when a man allegedly carrying a loaded pistol attempted to shoot Farooq Abdullah. Security personnel from the National Security Guard (NSG) immediately intervened and prevented the attempt.
The accused, identified as Kamal Singh, a resident of Purani Mandi, Jammu, was taken into custody. Police have recovered the firearm, and further investigation is underway.
In a separate remark, Rajani Patil raised concerns over the reported shortage of commercial LPG cylinders, urging the Prime Minister to address the issue, calling it a matter affecting households nationwide.
