Ballari (Karnataka): Tensions flared in Ballari after a clash broke out between supporters of Congress MLA Nara Bharath Reddy and BJP MLA G Janardhana Reddy over the installation of a banner related to an upcoming event.
The incident occurred outside the residence of BJP MLA G Janardhana Reddy, where his supporters reportedly objected to the installation of banners for a programme scheduled on January 3 to install a statue of Maharshi Valmiki. What began as a verbal dispute soon escalated into physical clashes, with both groups allegedly engaging in stone-pelting and scuffles.
Police intervened and resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control. As news of the altercation spread, supporters of both leaders gathered in large numbers at the spot, further heightening tensions in the city. Although neither of the MLAs was present in Ballari at the time of the incident, both rushed to the city after being informed of the clash.
Later addressing the media, Janardhana Reddy alleged that efforts were being made to disturb communal harmony and incite violence in the city under the pretext of the Valmiki statue installation.
Heavy police deployment was made in the area to prevent further escalation. Ballari Superintendent of Police said that while there were speculations about a possible death, no such incident had been confirmed so far.
An FIR has been registered at the Brucepet Police Station against 11 individuals, including Janardhana Reddy and former Karnataka Minister B Sriramulu, for allegedly tearing down the banner. Police said further investigation into the incident is underway.
