Woman Delivers Baby in Rickshaw After Hospital Denial

A woman gave birth in an auto rickshaw after being refused admission to a hospital.

The Aryavarth Express
Agency (Madhya Pradesh): A 30-year-old woman had to give birth in an auto rickshaw after being turned away from the Neemuch district hospital in Madhya Pradesh due to the absence of an anaesthetist. Both mother and baby were later admitted and are doing well. An investigation has been ordered by the district collector.

Dinesh Silavat, a blanket seller from Gangrar, Rajasthan, currently residing in Malkheda village, Neemuch, recounted the incident. His wife, Rajni, began experiencing labor pains at around 2:30 pm on Wednesday. Dinesh rushed her to the district hospital in a rickshaw, but the hospital staff directed them to go to Udaipur, Rajasthan, instead.

Despite his repeated pleas, the hospital staff did not relent. The female staff insisted they leave, and as they were leaving around 4 pm, Rajni delivered the baby in the rickshaw. Passersby provided sheets for privacy during the delivery.

Upon learning about the birth, the hospital staff allowed the mother and newborn to enter the hospital. The head of the maternity department, Dr. Lad Dhakad, explained that the anaesthetist was on leave, which prevented caesarean deliveries. The hospital also faced a shortage of doctors for regular duties.

Dr. Dhakad stated that his duty ended at 2 pm and he was informed about the woman’s condition afterward. He observed that her blood pressure was dangerously high and advised the family to take her to a larger hospital. He justified not admitting serious patients to avoid potential risks.

District collector Dinesh Jain confirmed that an inquiry is underway, and appropriate action will be taken if anyone is found at fault.
