Agency (Mumbai): A 46-year-old yoga teacher from Mumbai was allegedly duped of Rs 3.36 lakh by a man she met on the dating app Tinder. The man, identified as Amit Kumar, claimed to be a doctor residing in Manchester, England, according to police.
The woman, a resident of the Churchgate area in south Mumbai, recently connected with Kumar on Tinder. After a few days of interaction, they exchanged phone numbers and continued their conversations on WhatsApp.
On April 25, Kumar informed the victim that he had sent her a gift which she needed to collect. A few days later, a woman claiming to be from a courier company in Delhi contacted the victim, stating that there was a gift for her from Manchester. The caller demanded money to complete the formalities for sending the gift.
Trusting the caller, the victim deposited Rs 3.36 lakh into various accounts specified by the caller. It was only later that she realized she had been cheated. Subsequently, she approached the Marine Drive police on Tuesday to file a complaint.
Based on her complaint, a case has been registered against Kumar and the caller under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
This incident highlights the growing concern over online scams and the importance of vigilance while interacting with strangers on dating apps and social media platforms.
