Agency(Madurai): The Southern Railway’s ambitious project to revamp Madurai Railway Station is set to transform it into a hub that not only serves the increasing passenger traffic but also showcases the city’s historical and cultural aspects. The project, initiated on September 22, 2022, with a contract awarded to M/s P&C Projects Private Limited, Chennai, involves an investment of Rs 347.47 crore and aims for completion within 36 months.
The decision to undertake this major redevelopment stems from a detailed analysis of passenger footfall over the last decade, which has been steadily increasing by 1-2% annually. Projecting this trend forward, authorities anticipate the footfall could double to around 1 lakh passengers in the next 40 years. This foresight is driving the creation of extensive amenities to cater to future needs.
When queried about the financial sustainability of the project, the railway spokesperson, Mr. Gopal, emphasized that the focus is not on hiking prices for facilities but on generating revenue through commercial ventures. The station is expected to draw not only passengers but also visitors to its commercial areas, which will feature prominent brands and food outlets. This approach aims to create a vibrant and self-sustaining ecosystem within the station premises.
A notable aspect of the redevelopment is the emphasis on connectivity and accessibility. Plans include the construction of three multi-level parking facilities and improvements in multi-modal connections. These enhancements will include subways linking the Periyar bus station and Madurai Railway station, skywalks equipped with escalators and lifts, and foot over bridges to facilitate the smooth movement of passengers and parcels.
Additionally, the project’s oversight is entrusted to M/s TUV India Private Limited, Mumbai, which has been appointed for project management services (PMS) at a cost of Rs 10.88 crore. Their role encompasses meticulous monitoring of the redevelopment process, ensuring that the project adheres to its timeline and quality standards.
This comprehensive redevelopment of Madurai Railway Station is a significant step in modernizing the city’s infrastructure while paying homage to its rich cultural legacy. It aims to enhance passenger experience, promote commercial activities, and, importantly, preserve and showcase the historical and cultural identity of Madurai.
