Kolkata Metro Appeals for Cleanliness in New Stations

Kolkata Metro urges passengers to keep new stations clean, highlighting issues with gutkha, paan stains, and plastic waste at recently opened locations.

The Aryavarth Express
Agency(Kolkata): Kolkata Metro Railway has issued a call to its passengers, requesting them to maintain cleanliness, particularly in the newly inaugurated stations which have been tarnished by gutkha and paan stains, in addition to being littered with plastic waste. This appeal comes in light of the recent operation commencement of the country’s first underwater metro service that connects Howrah Maidan and Esplanade stations along the East-West corridor.

Metro Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Koushik Mitra, in a statement, highlighted the contrast in cleanliness between the newly opened stations and the older north-south line, which is notable for its maintenance and hygiene. The CPRO expressed concerns over a subset of commuters compromising the hygiene and aesthetics of the new stations through indiscriminate littering and staining, thereby degrading the environment of these beautifully designed spaces.

The Metro Railway administration is seeking the cooperation of all commuters to extend the same level of cleanliness and respect for public property observed in the north-south corridor to the new East-West corridor. The issue gained attention after images and reports of the littering and staining at Howrah Maidan and Esplanade stations began circulating on social media, prompting calls for immediate action to preserve the cleanliness and appeal of these modern infrastructural marvels. The appeal underscores the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining public spaces clean and welcoming for all users.
