Families of Pune accident victims call for strict legal actions against the minor driver and his parents.

Agency (Pune): The families of the victims of a tragic car accident in Pune are calling for severe punishment for the accused minor driver and his parents. The accident, which occurred on Sunday, claimed the lives of Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both 24-year-old IT professionals from Madhya Pradesh.

Ashwini hailed from Jabalpur, while Anish was from Birsinghpur Pali in Umaria district. Ashwini’s mother, Mamata Koshta, expressed her grief and anger, stating, “We were supposed to send her off in a palanquin after her marriage, but now we were forced to carry her body on a bier. We want justice for Ashwini. The minor boy and his parents should get stringent punishment. They have not raised him properly and should not have given him the car.”

Mamata was outraged that the Juvenile Justice Board had let the boy off with the task of writing an essay. “Is it a joke? What essay will he write? A joke is being played,” she said, tearfully recalling her daughter’s talents and dreams.

Ashwini’s father, Suresh Koshta, echoed these sentiments, criticizing the lack of stringent implementation of laws and calling for more thorough enforcement of traffic rules, including checks on helmet usage, overspeeding, drunk driving, and vehicles without number plates.

Anish’s father, Om Awadhiya, expressed his sorrow and the impact of his son’s death on the family. “The culprit will get punishment, but how can we bring back our child now? He was a big support for the family,” he said, worried about the future of his younger son who also lived with Anish in Pune.

The accident occurred around 3:15 am on Sunday when a group of friends were returning on motorbikes from a party. A speeding Porsche hit the motorcycle ridden by Anish and Ashwini at the Kalyani Nagar junction, resulting in their deaths.

The minor driver was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board, which granted him bail and directed him to study traffic rules and submit a presentation within 15 days. The Board also ordered the minor to write a 300-word essay on road accidents and their solutions. The police have charged the teenager under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Police have stated their intention to seek permission from a higher court to try the teenager as an adult. Additionally, the father of the 17-year-old driver has been detained, and three hotel executives were arrested for serving liquor to the minor.
