50 Sickened by Fast Food during ‘Mahashivratri’ in Nagpur

Over 50 individuals in Nagpur were poisoned after eating fast food during 'Mahashivratri'.

Agency(Maharashtra): In a regrettable incident in Nagpur, located in Maharashtra’s district, over 50 people suffered from food poisoning after partaking in festive foods during their ‘Mahashivratri’ fast, as confirmed by officials on Sunday. The individuals affected are residents of Kamptee within the district and some localities within Nagpur city, having observed the fast on the ‘Mahashivratri’ festival that took place on Friday. Post the consumption of ‘farali’ snacks, which are traditionally consumed during such fasting periods and comprised of sago, potatoes, and other components acquired from various shops and roadside vendors in Kamptee, numerous complaints emerged regarding digestive issues, abdominal pain, and nausea, as stated by a law enforcement representative.

Furthermore, in the Ganesh Nagar area of the city, a family of seven suffered from food poisoning subsequent to eating ‘jalebis’ (a type of sweet) and other food items prepared from water chestnut flour on Friday, detailed by officials from the Dhantoli police station. A merchant dealing in textiles from the Nanga Putla locality in Itwari also became sick after partaking ‘prasad’ from a religious venue on Friday. Additional reports included an individual from Vardhaman Nagar falling ill post a meal late on Friday night, and an elderly woman from Rana Pratap Nagar experiencing food poisoning symptoms after eating ‘kadhi’, as per the officials.

The individuals impacted received medical attention at various hospitals, with the majority being released post-treatment on Saturday. Niketan Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-V), disclosed that law enforcement has secured food samples from several outlets in Kamptee, which are slated for analysis by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) department.
