Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir): The 40-day harsh winter period known as Chillai Kalan began on December 21 across Jammu and Kashmir, ushering in rainfall and snowfall in several parts of the Kashmir Valley.

Chillai Kalan, which lasts until January 31, is marked by severe cold conditions, sub-zero temperatures, frozen water bodies and widespread frost and snowfall. The period is considered the coldest phase of winter in the region and often disrupts daily life.

Several areas, including Srinagar and Anantnag, experienced rainfall as the season officially set in, while higher reaches witnessed snowfall. In Sonamarg, located in Ganderbal district, fresh snow covered roads, vehicles and buildings, creating a scenic winter landscape that drew both residents and tourists.

Sonamarg recorded its first snowfall of the season on Sunday, while Srinagar continued to reel under a persistent cold wave accompanied by foggy mornings. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures in Srinagar dropped further, with the mercury falling by around 4 degrees Celsius compared to December 20.

Dense fog was reported in several parts of the city, particularly around Dal Lake. Despite the fog and cold conditions, boat rides and sightseeing activities continued, adding to the city’s winter charm.

Authorities have advised residents and tourists to remain cautious, take adequate measures to protect themselves from the cold, and stay updated on weather forecasts, especially in areas vulnerable to sudden snowfall and reduced visibility.
