The Aryavarth Express New Delhi, April 8: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at transforming urban mobility in Rajasthan’s capital.
The project involves the construction of a 41-kilometre North–South metro corridor from Prahladpura to Todi Mod, featuring 36 stations. The total estimated cost stands at ₹13,037.66 crore.
Jaipur Metro Phase-2 will be executed by Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited (RMRCL), a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan.
The new corridor is designed to enhance connectivity across key areas of the city, including Sitapura Industrial Area, VKIA, Jaipur Airport, Tonk Road, SMS Hospital and Stadium, Ambabari, and Vidhyadhar Nagar. It will also include underground sections near the airport and integrate seamlessly with the existing Phase-1 network through interchanges and feeder services.
Currently, Jaipur Metro Phase-1—an 11.64 km East–West corridor from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar—serves around 60,000 passengers daily. With the expansion under Phase-2, ridership is expected to increase significantly, boosting public transport usage and reducing reliance on private vehicles.
The project has cleared multiple levels of appraisal, including Inter-Ministerial consultations and Public Investment Board evaluation. It has demonstrated strong economic viability, with an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) exceeding the benchmark of 14%.
Funding will be arranged through a mix of equity contributions from the central and state governments, subordinate debt, and multilateral financing, in line with the Metro Rail Policy, 2017.
Aligned with Rajasthan’s Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Policy-2025 and broader urban transport reforms, the project is targeted for completion by September 2031. Once operational, it is expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce emissions, and significantly improve urban mobility, strengthening Jaipur’s position as a modern and sustainable city.
