Review Overview

The Aryavarth Express
New Delhi: The Budget Session of Parliament will begin on Wednesday, with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on the opening day.

The session will be held over 30 sittings spread across 65 days and is scheduled to conclude on April 2. Parliament will adjourn for a recess on February 13 and reconvene on March 9, allowing Standing Committees time to examine the Demands for Grants of various ministries and departments.

The first part of the session will primarily focus on financial business related to the Union Budget 2026–27 and discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address. Essential legislative and other business is expected to be taken up mainly during the second part of the session.

Ahead of the Budget, the Economic Survey of India will be tabled in Parliament on January 29, followed by the presentation of the Union Budget 2026–27 on February 1. Prepared by the Economic Division of the Department of Economic Affairs under the supervision of the Chief Economic Adviser, the Economic Survey provides an assessment of the economy during 2025–26 and outlines the outlook for the upcoming fiscal year.

An all-party meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was held on Tuesday to discuss the agenda for the session. Leaders from various political parties shared their views on issues likely to be raised and assured the government of their cooperation.

Meanwhile, MPs of the INDIA bloc are set to meet separately to formulate their strategy for the session. Opposition parties, including the Congress, are expected to raise issues such as the replacement of MGNREGA with the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, procurement of paddy, and alleged vote irregularities.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore said issues like “vote theft, SIR, procurement of paddy, and restoring MGNREGA” would be raised during the session.

Several political leaders and ministers arrived in the national capital ahead of the session. Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries George Kurian, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, NCP MP Supriya Sule, and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi were among those who reached Delhi to attend the proceedings.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju sought cooperation from all parties for the smooth functioning of Parliament and said the government is open to discussions in accordance with parliamentary rules. He said the Budget Session would begin with the President’s address, followed by a debate on the Motion of Thanks, in which all parties would participate.

The government is expected to push its legislative agenda during the session, including the passage of pending bills in both Houses of Parliament.
