New Delhi: A political war of words has intensified between the BJP and Congress, with BJP MP Nishikant Dubey alleging that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi acted as an agent for a Swedish military company during the 1970s. Sharing a purported document on social media, Dubey claimed that Rajiv Gandhi, the father of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, was involved in “brokerage” activities at the time.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Dubey questioned:
“Rahul Gandhi ji’s father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi ji, was an agent of a Swedish military company, meaning he was involved in brokerage in the 70s?”
The allegation comes amid mounting pressure on Dubey himself, with the Congress accusing him of financial impropriety.
Congress Fires Back Over Asset Surge
Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate countered the claims by raising serious allegations against Dubey. she pointed to a Lokpal complaint that highlights a massive increase in the assets of Dubey’s wife—from ₹50 lakh in 2009 to around ₹32 crore in 2024—despite no proportional rise in the MP’s declared income.
“Nishikant Dubey is a four-time BJP MP and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and IT. The Lokpal bench has asked him to respond within four weeks,” Shrinate said.
She further questioned the legitimacy of a ₹1.2 crore loan declared in Dubey’s 2024 affidavit, allegedly taken from one Abhishek Jha. According to Shrinate, Jha—who contested against Dubey as an independent—has denied giving such a loan, raising concerns about the source of funds.
BJP Responds, Cites Lokpal Proceedings
Responding to the Congress’ accusations, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya defended Dubey and accused the complainant of avoiding the Lokpal hearings.
“Anamika Gautam will present her case before the Lokpal. Since the matter is under investigation, commenting now would be inappropriate. But when the complainant doesn’t attend hearings, why is the Congress holding press conferences? Clearly, the Gandhi family is rattled by Nishikant Dubey’s revelations,” Malviya posted on X.
As both parties trade charges, the row underscores the escalating tensions ahead of upcoming political battles, with legacy, accountability, and transparency becoming focal points in the crossfire.
