Nashik (Maharashtra) [India], December 16: In a major boost to Nashik’s environmental initiatives, Maharashtra’s Minister for Water Resources, Disaster Management and Kumbh Mela, Girish Mahajan, on Tuesday inaugurated the digital tree plantation mobile application ‘Hareet Nashik, Smart Nashik’. The launch event, held at 10:00 am, marked a significant step towards strengthening technology-driven environmental governance in the city.
Developed by leading technology solutions provider BigCloudy in partnership with the Nashik Municipal Corporation, the app aims to bring transparency, accountability and citizen participation to urban tree plantation efforts.
The application offers a range of features, including a digital identity for every planted tree with geo-tagged location tracking, real-time selfie uploads with timestamps, and a live counter displaying the total number of trees planted across the city. To ensure inclusivity, the app is available in Marathi, Hindi and English.
Citizens and organisations can also use the app to request a minimum of 25 free saplings from the Nashik Municipal Corporation through an integrated order form. A centralised municipal dashboard enables authorities to monitor plantation activities and track tree survival rates in real time.
BigCloudy said the Hareet Nashik app addresses long-standing challenges in urban forestry, where monitoring sapling survival and ensuring accountability have often been difficult. By assigning each tree a digital identity—with planter details, GPS coordinates and growth records—the platform transforms plantation drives into a transparent and measurable process.
“Every tree planted through our app receives a digital identity complete with a planter photograph, GPS location and growth-tracking capability. This ensures that tree plantation becomes a continuous, accountable effort rather than a symbolic activity,” a BigCloudy representative said.
Using the app is simple: users plant a sapling, take a selfie with it and upload the geo-tagged image. The data is then added to Nashik’s digital green registry, allowing citizens and authorities alike to track plantation progress across neighbourhoods. Community groups can also place bulk requests for saplings, which are supplied free of cost by the municipal corporation.
The application, hosted on BigCloudy’s own servers, has been developed to support the Green Nashik, Smart Nashik initiative. Known for its historic temples, vineyards and as the host city of the Kumbh Mela, Nashik is now strengthening its environmental legacy through this technology-led approach.
Minister Girish Mahajan’s participation in the launch underscored the state government’s commitment to using digital solutions for environmental protection and sustainable urban development.
