The Aryavarth Express Mumbai, Maharashtra: Former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar has urged Punjab Kings to include spinner Harpreet Brar in every match of the upcoming IPL 2026 season, describing him as a “quality player” capable of delivering against both left- and right-handed batters.
Punjab Kings, runners-up in IPL 2025, will begin their campaign against Gujarat Titans on March 31 in New Chandigarh.
Speaking on JioHotstar’s Game Plan – Know Your Team, Bangar highlighted Brar’s value, especially in the powerplay. With the departure of Glenn Maxwell, who previously contributed crucial overs, Bangar believes Brar can step up alongside Yuzvendra Chahal, who primarily operates in the middle overs.
Bangar recalled his time with the PBKS coaching setup, noting the confidence he had in Brar’s abilities. “Do not play him just for match-ups. He can bowl effectively to any batter, regardless of their handedness. He should feature in every match, even if as an impact player,” he said.
Brar has shown consistent improvement, having taken 35 wickets in 49 IPL matches for PBKS since 2019. His 2025 season was particularly impressive, claiming 10 wickets in eight matches at an average of 19.00. He also arrives in strong form from domestic cricket, where he picked up 23 wickets in just four matches in the Ranji Trophy, including two five-wicket hauls.
Bangar also emphasized the importance of Punjab’s opening pair of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, both of whom had breakout seasons last year. Priyansh scored 475 runs at a strike rate above 179, while Prabhsimran amassed 549 runs at a strike rate exceeding 160.
However, Bangar expressed slight concern over Priyansh’s recent domestic form, noting that expectations will be higher this season. “If he starts well, there will be no issues. But a string of low scores could raise questions about the opening combination,” he said.
On the other hand, Bangar backed Prabhsimran to maintain consistency, citing his experience and the franchise’s continued faith in him.
With a balanced squad and promising young talent, Punjab Kings will look to build on last season’s success and mount a strong title challenge in IPL 2026.
