Bangalore: Once hailed as the Garden City of India, Bangalore is now earning an unfortunate new title—the Garbage City. Residents and civic activists are strongly criticizing the BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) and the Congress-led Karnataka government for the unchecked corruption and total neglect of waste management.
Photos and videos showing overflowing garbage bins, broken drainage systems, and uncollected waste have flooded social media, sparking public outrage.
“We used to be proud of our city. Now it stinks—literally and metaphorically,” says Prashanth N., a resident of JP Nagar.
Critics allege that corruption within BBMP has reached record levels, with funds for waste management, infrastructure repair, and basic amenities allegedly being siphoned off or misused. Several citizen forums claim RTI replies have exposed ghost contractors and inflated project bills.
“This government has successfully turned a global tech hub into a dump yard. It’s a textbook example of how not to govern a city,” said urban analyst Meera Kulkarni.
Despite multiple protests and civic campaigns, authorities remain indifferent, fuelling further public anger.
Social media users have coined hashtags like #GarbageCity and #BBMPFail, which are now trending across platforms.
The Bigger Picture: The neglect in Bangalore is becoming symbolic of broader issues with urban governance across India. If not addressed urgently, the city’s global reputation – and its citizens’ quality of life – could deteriorate further.
