Guwahati: In a series of coordinated anti-narcotics operations, Assam Rifles and the police have seized over Rs 8.5 crore worth of heroin across multiple districts in the state, dealing a significant blow to the drug trafficking network.

In a joint operation with the Ngopa Police, the Assam Rifles recovered 758 grams of Heroin No. 4 during a vehicle check in the Teikhang area of Saitual on the night of May 26-27. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, security personnel established a Mobile Vehicle Check Post (MVCP), where they intercepted two individuals riding Kenbo bikes. The seized heroin is estimated to be worth approximately Rs 5.3 crore. The arrested individuals and the contraband have been handed over to Ngopa Police Station for further investigation.

In another major crackdown on Tuesday, the Assam Police, in collaboration with Assam Rifles and the Anti-Rhino Force Intelligence Unit (ARFIU), conducted a joint raid in the Cachar district. The operation resulted in the seizure of 648 grams of heroin, valued at around Rs 3.5 crore, along with a pistol. One suspected drug peddler was arrested during the raid.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the efforts on social media platform X, stating, “The relentless anti-narcotics ops continue. In an anti-narcotics operation carried out by @cacharpolice, ARFIU and Assam Rifles, 648g heroin worth Rs 3.5 crore and one pistol were recovered. One peddler has been arrested.”

Earlier, the Assam Police made further headway in the war against drugs by seizing narcotics worth over Rs 11.5 crore in two separate operations in Karbi Anglong and Cachar districts. In Silchar, one individual, identified as Ikbal Hussain Mazumder, was arrested with 84 grams of heroin. Meanwhile, Karbi Anglong police intercepted a vehicle at the Khatkhati check post and recovered 4.899 kg of morphine valued at approximately Rs 5 crore, leading to the arrest of another drug trafficker.

These operations form part of the state government’s intensified efforts to curb the narcotics menace along both interstate and international routes.
