New Delhi: The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) on Sunday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging immediate intervention to ensure the safety, protection, and justice for Indian medical students in Russia following a knife attack in which four Indian students were injured in the city of Ufa.
In its letter, AIMSA appealed to the Prime Minister to take urgent diplomatic steps with Russian authorities, strengthen safety mechanisms for Indian students studying abroad, and establish emergency support systems to prevent such incidents in the future.
Expressing deep concern over the incident, AIMSA said the attack occurred at Bashkir State Medical University and has created fear and insecurity among thousands of Indian medical students pursuing education overseas.
“Such incidents not only endanger the lives and dignity of our students but also create an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among Indian medical students studying abroad,” the association said, strongly condemning the attack.
AIMSA emphasised that the safety and well-being of Indian students must remain a top priority for the government. “Indian students travel overseas with aspirations of becoming healthcare professionals and serving humanity. Any act of violence, discrimination, or hostility against them is unacceptable and must be strongly condemned,” it added.
In its appeal, AIMSA urged the government to take immediate diplomatic measures to ensure justice for the injured students, strengthen safety and student support systems, issue clear advisories, establish emergency helplines for Indian students facing threats or discrimination, and ensure strict monitoring and coordination with foreign universities and governments.
The association said it stands in solidarity with the affected students and their families and called for urgent intervention to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
Earlier, the Indian Embassy in Moscow confirmed that four Indian students were among those injured in a knife attack in Ufa. In a post on social media platform X, the Embassy said an unfortunate incident had taken place and that several people were injured.
The Embassy added that it is in touch with local authorities and that officials from the Indian Consulate in Kazan are travelling to Ufa to provide assistance to the injured students.
