The Aryavarth Express New Delhi: Former India cricketer Abhishek Nayar has raised concerns about India’s opening combination after their struggles against off-spin bowling during the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Speaking on JioHotstar, Abhishek Nayar pointed to the lack of rhythm and clarity at the top of the order, particularly highlighting the performances of Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma.
Kishan has been India’s second-highest run-scorer in the tournament so far, amassing 176 runs in five matches at an average of 35.20. In contrast, Abhishek Sharma, currently ranked World No. 1 in T20Is, has endured a difficult campaign, managing just 15 runs in four matches, including three ducks.
Nayar explained that off-spinners operating with the new ball can exploit variable bounce and seam movement, making aggressive stroke play risky during the powerplay. He noted that even slight deviation off the seam can create doubt in a batter’s mind, often resulting in wickets in the shortest format.
He also cautioned that teams such as the West Indies could use off-spin options like Roston Chase early in the innings, forcing India to come prepared with clearer tactical plans.
Meanwhile, South Africa ended India’s 12-match unbeaten streak in the tournament with a 76-run victory in Ahmedabad on Sunday, tightening India’s path to the semi-finals. The defeat has increased pressure on the defending champions, who now need to win their remaining Super Eight fixtures with a strong net run rate to stay in contention.
India will next face Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday as they look to revive their campaign.
