New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs on Friday staged a protest outside the Delhi Assembly, accusing the BJP-led state government of diverting attention from pressing civic issues by circulating what they termed a “fraudulent” video involving Leader of Opposition Atishi.
AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha alleged that the BJP was attempting to shift focus away from problems such as law and order, contaminated drinking water, pollution and the condition of the Yamuna river. He claimed that a misleading video, purportedly involving remarks by Atishi, was being used to stoke controversy.
“Instead of discussing real issues like law and order, pollution, the Yamuna and contaminated water, the BJP has circulated a fraudulent video and dragged the name of Guru Sahab into it,” Jha said. He accused Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra of posting a clip with an incorrect transcription and demanded strict action against him and others who shared the video. Jha called for their suspension for six months.
The protest comes a day after chaos erupted inside the Delhi Assembly, where BJP MLAs staged demonstrations against AAP over alleged remarks by Atishi related to a Sikh Guru. In response, AAP legislators entered the House with posters and slogans, demanding Kapil Mishra’s resignation.
The winter session of the Delhi Legislative Assembly began on January 5 and is scheduled to continue until January 8.
AAP MLA and Deputy Leader of Opposition Mukesh Ahlawat has written to Speaker Vijendra Gupta, raising objections to the allegations against Atishi and the circulation of the video. In his letter, Ahlawat said the clip shared by Kapil Mishra was not part of the official Assembly record, questioning how the footage was obtained.
He further stated that even in the video shared, Atishi can be heard asking for a discussion in the House and questioning why the BJP members were avoiding it. The AAP legislative party has demanded the release of the complete, unedited footage from Assembly cameras to clearly establish what Atishi said.
The party has also sought the cancellation of Kapil Mishra’s Assembly membership for allegedly circulating false content, along with a six-month suspension of other MLAs who shared what AAP claims was a manipulated video with an incorrect transcription.
