The Aryavarth Express:
Patna, April 7: BJP MP Ravi Kishan on Tuesday welcomed the proposed implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023, saying it would enhance women’s participation in Parliament and strengthen representation of grassroots issues.
Speaking to, Kishan said the move reflects the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and would empower women across the country. He noted that with 33% reservation in the Lok Sabha, more women MPs would be able to effectively raise concerns of their constituencies.
The development comes after Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced that a special session of Parliament will be held on April 16 to take up the Women’s Reservation Bill.
However, the move has drawn criticism from opposition parties. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh questioned the timing, alleging it is aimed at diverting attention from economic concerns and influencing voters ahead of elections in five states.
Ramesh pointed out that the legislation, passed unanimously in September 2023, included provisions under Article 334A linking its implementation to delimitation and the completion of the census. He criticised the government’s reported move to amend these conditions, calling it a political “U-turn.”
In response, Prime Minister Modi has urged the Congress to extend full support to the proposed amendment during the upcoming special session, stressing that the issue should rise above political considerations.
The Women’s Reservation Bill seeks to reserve one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha for women, marking a significant step toward increasing gender representation in India’s legislative process.
