Review Overview

The Aryavarth Express Rajouri (Jammu and Kashmir), April 3: A sudden cold wave has swept across Rajouri and the Pir Panjal region following continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days, leading to a sharp dip in temperatures and difficult weather conditions.

In response, the district administration has issued an advisory urging residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in hilly and vulnerable areas prone to landslides.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Kalakote, Dr. Mohd Tanvir, said the weather shift has been abrupt. “The region was earlier facing drought-like conditions, and now heavy rainfall has set in. A high alert has been issued, with more rain expected until April 10,” he said.

He assured that all departments, including roads, बिजली (electricity), public health engineering (PHE), and health services, are on high alert. “Our teams are fully prepared to handle emergencies such as road blockages, power disruptions, or storm-related damage,” he added.

Advising people to stay indoors, he said, “Residents should avoid stepping out unless necessary. The temperature has dropped significantly — from light clothing to requiring warm clothes like sweaters and jackets.”

Authorities have activated control rooms and deployed teams in landslide-prone and sensitive areas. Coordination with disaster response agencies is also in place to ensure swift action in case of emergencies.

Officials emphasized maintaining essential services such as drinking water supply, healthcare, electricity, and road connectivity, even in remote regions. Residents living near riverbanks and low-lying areas have been asked to stay extra vigilant due to the risk of rising water levels.

Schools and institutions have also been directed to take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Development Work Continues in Border Areas

Despite the adverse weather, development projects in border areas like Nowshera block are progressing steadily. Infrastructure work, including road construction, footpaths, culverts, and protective bunkers, is being carried out to improve connectivity, drainage, and safety for residents near the Line of Control.

These initiatives are helping locals access essential services more easily while also strengthening resilience during harsh weather conditions.

Residents have welcomed the efforts, especially the construction of bunkers. A local resident, Sureshta, expressed gratitude, saying, “Bunkers in homes and schools have made us feel safe. Earlier, people were injured during firing, but now there is no fear.”

An ex-serviceman, Depty Lal, also praised the government’s efforts, highlighting the importance of bunkers in ensuring safety during cross-border tensions.

The ongoing infrastructure push reflects the government’s focus on improving living conditions and security for communities residing in sensitive border regions.
