The Aryavarth Express Visakhapatnam, April 3: The Indian Navy on Friday commissioned INS Taragiri, hailing it as a testament to “strength, stealth and indigenous excellence,” and a reflection of India’s growing stature as a formidable maritime power.
In a post on X, the Navy described the warship as a blend of legacy and future readiness, stating that Taragiri is fully prepared to safeguard the nation’s maritime frontiers.
The commissioning ceremony, held in Visakhapatnam, was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, highlighting the increasing strategic importance of India’s eastern seaboard amid evolving Indo-Pacific security dynamics.
INS Taragiri is the fourth stealth frigate under the Project 17A programme and represents a significant leap in naval design and capability. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, the 6,670-tonne warship showcases advanced indigenous engineering.
With over 75 per cent indigenous content, the vessel underscores the success of the government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives. Its construction involved more than 200 MSMEs, boosting domestic industry and generating employment.
Engineered for stealth, Taragiri features a sleek design with reduced radar cross-section, enhancing its operational advantage in combat scenarios. It is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, enabling both high-speed performance and long-endurance missions.
The frigate is equipped with a sophisticated weapons suite, including supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and an advanced anti-submarine warfare system. These capabilities are integrated through a state-of-the-art combat management system for rapid and precise response.
Beyond combat, INS Taragiri is designed for multi-role operations, including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions, making it a versatile asset for both defence and diplomacy.
With its induction, the Indian Navy continues to enhance its combat readiness and reaffirm its commitment to becoming a modern, self-reliant force dedicated to safeguarding India’s maritime interests.
