The Aryavarth Express:
London [UK], March 31 : Australia’s Test opener Jake Weatherald has signed with Leicestershire County Cricket Club for the opening phase of the County Championship season.
The 31-year-old arrives in England after a breakthrough winter, having made his Test debut during the Ashes series against England. Weatherald featured in all five matches, scoring 201 runs at an average of 22.33 as Australia secured a convincing 4–1 series victory.
Despite being relatively new to international cricket, Weatherald brings strong first-class credentials. Across 85 matches, he has amassed 5,784 runs, including 13 centuries, at an average of 36.84.
With a busy international schedule ahead—including a home series against Bangladesh and key clashes with South Africa, New Zealand, and India—Weatherald has opted for a county stint to maintain form and gain experience in English conditions.
Expressing his excitement, Weatherald said he is “buzzing” to join Leicestershire and is eager to experience the tradition and competitiveness of county cricket while contributing to the team’s success.
Head coach Alfonso Thomas welcomed the signing, noting Weatherald’s ability to perform at the highest level and his positive, competitive approach, which is expected to strengthen the squad both on and off the field.
