New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated the Indian men’s cricket team after they defeated New Zealand in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 to successfully defend their title.

India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, registered a commanding 96-run victory over the Mitchell Santner-led New Zealand side in the final. With the win, India became the first team to win consecutive T20 World Cups after also claiming the 2024 edition. The triumph also marked India’s third T20 World Cup title, following earlier victories in 2007 and 2024, and made them the first team to win the tournament on home soil.

In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi praised the team’s determination, discipline and self-belief throughout the tournament.

“By winning the T20 Cricket World Cup, Team India has shown that determination, restraint and self-confidence are the key to success. This victory reminds us that with hard work in the right direction, patience and persistence, any goal can be achieved,” the Prime Minister wrote.

Earlier, shortly after the final on Sunday night, he had congratulated the team in another message on X, calling the triumph a moment of pride for the entire nation.

“Champions! Congratulations to the Indian team on winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. This remarkable victory reflects exceptional skill, determination and teamwork. Their grit throughout the tournament has filled every Indian heart with pride and joy. Well done, Team India,” he said.

In the final, New Zealand won the toss and opted to field first. However, India delivered a dominant batting performance. Abhishek Sharma scored a blistering 52 off just 21 balls, hitting six fours and three sixes, and shared a 98-run partnership with Sanju Samson.

Samson later added a century stand with Ishan Kishan, who scored 54 off 25 balls, including four fours and four sixes, as India crossed the 200-run mark in the 16th over. A quick cameo from Shivam Dube, who remained unbeaten on 26 from just eight balls, helped India post 255/5 — the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final.

For New Zealand, James Neesham was the most successful bowler with figures of 3/46.

Chasing a daunting target of 256, New Zealand struggled early as Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah tore through the top order. Bumrah finished with outstanding figures of 4/15, while Axar Patel took 3/23 to leave the Kiwis reeling at 72/5.

Although Tim Seifert scored a quick 52 off 26 balls and there was a brief resistance from Daryl Mitchell and captain Mitchell Santner, the Indian bowlers maintained control. New Zealand were eventually bowled out for 159, sealing a comprehensive victory for India.
