New Delhi: Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha continued discussions on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address on Tuesday as Parliament’s Budget Session 2026 proceeds. This debate follows President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the joint sitting of both houses, which formally opened the Budget Session.
In the Rajya Sabha, MPs are engaging in a detailed debate on the motion, with members from ruling and opposition parties highlighting contrasting views on national development, social policy, and economic progress outlined in the President’s speech. Around 16 hours have been allotted for this discussion in the upper house.
In the Lok Sabha, discussion on the motion has also been underway, with a total of 18 hours set aside for debate across multiple days. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and several other opposition leaders have taken part in the proceedings, raising issues ranging from national security to broader policy challenges, triggering some heated exchanges and adjournments during the debate. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to reply to the motion on February 4.
The debate on the Motion of Thanks is an important parliamentary exercise that allows lawmakers to discuss the President’s address, review government priorities, and outline views ahead of detailed discussions on the Union Budget 2026–27.
