Bengaluru: Dr. C.J. Roy, chairman and owner of the Confident Group, was found dead at his office in central Bengaluru on Friday in an apparent case of suicide. He was 57. The incident has sent shockwaves through the city’s business and real estate circles.
According to police, Roy was found with a gunshot wound inside his office premises at Anepalya and was declared dead at the scene. Staff members alerted authorities, following which senior police officials and forensic teams rushed to the spot and began an investigation.
Police confirmed that officials from the Income Tax Department had earlier conducted a raid and questioned Roy on Friday. Preliminary findings suggest that he was alone in his office at the time of the incident. Procedural formalities, including a post-mortem examination, have been initiated. Investigators said no motive has been established so far and it is not yet clear whether a suicide note was recovered. Statements from family members, colleagues and associates are being recorded.
Founded in 2005, the Confident Group is a prominent real estate and infrastructure developer with projects spanning residential, commercial and mixed-use developments across Karnataka and other parts of India. Roy was widely regarded as a hands-on entrepreneur who played a key role in the company’s expansion over the past two decades.
News of Roy’s death triggered an outpouring of grief from employees and industry peers, many of whom described him as a driven businessman with strong operational insight. Employees at the company’s offices were seen in visible distress.
The incident has also brought renewed focus on the pressures faced by senior corporate leaders, particularly in sectors such as real estate that are grappling with regulatory compliance, financing constraints and volatile market conditions.
Meanwhile, questions have emerged over leadership continuity at the Confident Group. Company sources said steps are being taken to ensure operational stability, with ongoing projects expected to continue as scheduled. Police said the investigation is ongoing and further details will be shared as the inquiry progresses.
