A three-vehicle accident was reported near Gandhigram Road, close to Silver Bridge Cafe, in Mumbai on Monday night, involving an autorickshaw, an electric luxury car, and a police escort vehicle assigned to actor Akshay Kumar, officials said.
According to Inspector Shaukat Rajak Inamdar of Juhu Police Station, the incident occurred around 9:15 pm on January 19, when police were clearing traffic due to congestion in the area. An electric luxury car allegedly cut into the path of an autorickshaw, causing it to collide with the rear of an Innova police escort vehicle driven by a police officer.
Following the impact, the autorickshaw became lodged under the escort vehicle and had to be removed with the help of the fire brigade. The police immediately shifted both the rickshaw driver and a passenger to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
“The Innova was an escort vehicle assigned to Akshay Kumar. While traffic was being cleared, the autorickshaw coming from behind hit the vehicle after an electric Mercedes cut into its path,” Inspector Inamdar said.
Police have arrested Radheshyam Rai, identified as the driver responsible for the accident. A case has been registered under Sections 281, 125A, and 125B of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita (BNS), and further investigation is being carried out by Police Sub-Inspector Pathak.
Videos from the accident site have surfaced on social media, showing local residents assisting authorities in rescuing an injured man from the wreckage. The autorickshaw driver sustained serious injuries, according to his family.
“The accident happened around 8:30 pm. My brother’s rickshaw was completely destroyed, and his condition is serious,” said Mohammed Sameer, the driver’s brother. “We request proper medical treatment for him, the required medicines, and compensation for the damaged rickshaw.”
Further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
