Cuttack (Odisha): Security was tightened across Cuttack and several other parts of Odisha after multiple courts received an anonymous e-mail threatening to damage court premises, prompting authorities to place judicial complexes on high alert.

Following the threat, security agencies swung into action, deploying bomb disposal squads, dog squads and additional police personnel as part of standard safety protocols to prevent any untoward incident.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo said that the threat was being treated with utmost seriousness. “A message was received from a security point of view. As it is a sensitive matter, standard operating procedures are being followed. Bomb disposal and dog squads are conducting thorough checks of the premises, and inspections are ongoing,” he said, adding that more details would emerge after the assessment was completed.

Odisha Director General of Police Yogesh Bahadur Khurania said police had taken cognisance of the anonymous e-mail received on Wednesday and launched a detailed investigation. “As a precautionary measure, enhanced security arrangements and police checks have been put in place at all concerned locations. The situation is under close monitoring,” he said, urging the public not to panic and to cooperate with authorities.

Soon after the e-mail was received, court staff, advocates and visitors were evacuated from the Odisha High Court and district court premises to facilitate security checks. The threat led to heightened anxiety among lawyers, with court proceedings coming to a standstill.

Senior Advocate Prafulla Kumar Sahoo said the situation had disrupted normal functioning and raised concerns over emergency preparedness. “Our work has been halted, and there is no clarity yet on the investigation. If an emergency arises, evacuating the premises would be extremely difficult due to the large number of vehicles parked here and poor traffic management. Security needs to be further tightened,” he said.

Authorities continue to assess the threat while maintaining heightened vigilance across court complexes in the state.
