Nadia (West Bengal): West Bengal Police on Friday warned against the spread of rumours and attempts to create communal disharmony following an incident of idol vandalism in Santipur that occurred a few days ago.

Clarifying the incident, police said two local residents—Amit Dey and his brother Asit Dey—allegedly vandalised several clay idols of Goddess Saraswati while under the influence of alcohol. The idols had been crafted by local sculptor Palash Das.

In a post on X, West Bengal Police stated that “mischievous efforts” were being made by certain quarters to spread misinformation and communal tension over the incident. The police emphasised that the matter involved local individuals and had no communal angle.

“A specific case has been registered, and all-out efforts are on to arrest the accused duo. Attempts to communalise the incident on social media will be sternly dealt with. Citizens are requested not to fall for rumours,” the police said in the post.

Authorities reiterated that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to misuse the incident to disturb communal harmony.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, West Bengal Police detained Golam Nabi Azad, also known as Robin, son of Janata Unnayan Party (JUP) chairman Humayun Kabir, for allegedly assaulting Kabir’s personal security officer (PSO), Jumma Khan.

According to the Superintendent of Police, Murshidabad, the PSO lodged a complaint stating that he was allegedly beaten by Golam Nabi Azad after seeking leave to go home. The incident reportedly took place in public view at the ground-floor office of Humayun Kabir under the jurisdiction of Saktipur Police Station.

Following a preliminary inquiry, police identified Golam Nabi Azad as the prime accused and detained him. Further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
