Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari on Monday strongly criticised the BJP-led state government over the water contamination incident in Indore’s Bhagirathpura area, alleging that more than 30 people have died due to the tragedy. He demanded the registration of an FIR against the Indore mayor and concerned officials, holding the administration responsible for the incident.

Patwari also called for the resignation of the local MLA and state cabinet minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, and accused Chief Minister Mohan Yadav of failing in his responsibilities as the minister in charge of Indore.

“Not 17, but more than 30 deaths have occurred. BJP workers and the administration are preventing the media from assessing the situation. If a door-to-door survey is conducted, the real number of deaths will come out. Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya should be removed, and an FIR must be registered against the mayor and the officials concerned. CM Mohan Yadav, being the minister in charge of Indore, did not fulfil his duty and has ruined the city. The people of Indore will respond to these deaths,” Patwari said.

Meanwhile, Indore Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr Madhav Prasad Hasani said the official death toll stood at six as of January 4. He added that a committee has been formed to conduct a death audit, and its report is expected later in the day, after which the final figures will be clarified.

“A committee has been constituted to analyse the official figures of deaths. The deaths due to diarrhoeal disease declared so far are six. The committee is examining other deaths reported during this period. After reviewing medical records and receiving the audit report, we will update the figures,” Dr Hasani said.

The water contamination incident in Bhagirathpura has triggered widespread concern and criticism, as several families were affected. In response, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and free treatment for all those affected by the incident.
