Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh): Young left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma expressed satisfaction after making a composed and impactful international debut for India in the opening match against Sri Lanka in Vizag on Sunday.
Vaishnavi featured in her first senior international game at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium and played a key role in India’s clinical eight-wicket victory. Although she did not pick up a wicket, the 20-year-old impressed with her discipline, bowling four economical overs without conceding a single boundary against Sri Lanka’s strong batting line-up.
Speaking to the media after the match, Vaishnavi admitted she felt nervous ahead of the game but said the pressure eased once the match began.
“I am very happy that I was able to execute my plan. There are four more matches to go in the series,” she said.
“I was nervous before the national anthem. After that, I calmed down,” she added.
Vaishnavi earned her senior team call-up following a stellar performance at the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year, where she finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 17 wickets at an outstanding average of 4.35.
Determined to build on her promising start, Vaishnavi said she hopes to continue working hard and become a regular member of India’s white-ball setup.
“We have worked hard for this. Our dream is to represent India and contribute. I can’t say much about the future. Let’s leave it to God,” she concluded.
