New Delhi:
Amid criticism from the BJP over Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Germany, senior Congress leader Imran Masood on Wednesday came out in his defence, questioning what he described as a double standard in the scrutiny of foreign visits by political leaders.
Masood said that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s overseas engagements are widely praised, Rahul Gandhi is routinely targeted for travelling abroad. “No one asks the Prime Minister where he is roaming. Prime Minister Modi is with the Prince of Jordan and he is glorified, while questions are raised on the Leader of Opposition,” Masood told.
Rahul Gandhi’s five-day visit to Germany was announced during the Winter Session of Parliament, drawing criticism from BJP leaders, who alleged that his frequent foreign trips raise questions about his commitment to the Congress and parliamentary responsibilities.
On his arrival in Berlin, Gandhi received a warm welcome from members of the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC). He was greeted with garlands at the airport by IOC leaders and supporters.
Earlier in the day, the Leader of Opposition spoke about India’s manufacturing sector, expressing concern over what he termed its decline. In a video shared by Congress leader Alok Sharma, Gandhi recounted his visit to a BMW factory, calling it a “fantastic experience.”
“We went to the BMW factory — it was a fantastic experience. I was particularly excited to see that they have a 450cc bike, the TVS, and I think that’s going to do well. It was good to see that the Indian flag flying here,” Gandhi said.
Emphasising the importance of manufacturing for economic growth, Gandhi added, “India needs to start producing. Production is the key to the success of any country. Our manufacturing is declining; it should actually be growing up.”
