Review Overview

The Aryavarth Express

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Amman on Monday for a two-day visit to Jordan, marking the first leg of his three-nation tour. He was received by Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan upon arrival.

The visit, undertaken at the invitation of King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein, aims to strengthen bilateral relations between India and Jordan. During his stay from December 15 to 16, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold talks with King Abdullah II to review the full spectrum of India-Jordan ties and exchange views on key regional developments.

The visit holds special significance as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, a milestone expected to further deepen cooperation. The Prime Minister will also engage with members of the Indian community in Jordan.

In his departure statement, Prime Minister Modi said he was embarking on a visit to Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman—three countries with which India shares ancient civilizational links as well as strong contemporary partnerships.

Following the Jordan visit, the Prime Minister will travel to Ethiopia from December 16 to 17, marking his first-ever visit to the African nation. In Addis Ababa, he will hold detailed discussions with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali on various aspects of bilateral cooperation. He is also scheduled to address a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament and interact with the Indian diaspora. Addis Ababa, which hosts the headquarters of the African Union, holds added importance following the AU’s induction as a permanent G20 member during India’s G20 Presidency in 2023.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the Ethiopia visit will reaffirm the shared commitment of both countries, as partners in the Global South, to further strengthen bilateral engagement.

The final leg of the tour will take Prime Minister Modi to Oman from December 17 to 18 at the invitation of Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, marking his second visit to the country. In Muscat, he will hold discussions with the Sultan to advance the India-Oman Strategic Partnership and review cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, energy, defence, security, technology, agriculture and culture.

The visit to Oman coincides with 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries and follows the Sultan of Oman’s state visit to India in December 2023. Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to address the Indian diaspora in Oman, acknowledging their role in strengthening bilateral ties.
