The Aryavarth Express

New Delhi: Activist Umar Khalid, accused in the Northeast Delhi riots larger conspiracy case, has moved a Delhi court seeking interim bail to attend his sister’s wedding later this month. The application was filed before Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai at Karkardooma Court, who will hear the plea on December 11.

Khalid has requested interim bail from December 14 to 29, as his sister is set to marry on December 27. He was previously granted interim bail two years ago for another sister’s wedding.

Khalid is charge-sheeted under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the alleged larger conspiracy behind the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots. His main bail plea remains pending before the Supreme Court, after earlier rejections by both the Delhi High Court and the trial court.

Several others — including Sharjeel Imam, Tahir Hussain, Shifa-ur-Rehman, Abdul Khalid Saifi, Meeran Haider, Natasha Narwal, and Devangana Kalita — are also named as accused in the conspiracy case.

In November, Delhi Police informed the Supreme Court that the trial of multiple accused, including Khalid and Imam, is expected to conclude within two years. The submission came as the police continued arguments opposing their bail pleas.

The ASG noted that the initial chargesheet was filed on September 16, 2020, followed by a supplementary chargesheet on November 22, 2020. He also highlighted that under Section 16(1)(a) of the UAPA, those convicted of committing a terrorist act face a minimum of five years’ imprisonment, which may extend to life, with no upper limit capped at five years.
