Ballia (Uttar Pradesh): A suspected cow smuggler was injured in a police encounter early Wednesday in the Sikanderpur area of Ballia district, after he allegedly opened fire at officers manning a checkpoint set up to curb illegal cattle transportation.

According to ASP Ballia Dinesh Chand Shukla, the suspect approached the barricade on a motorcycle and attempted to escape. His bike skidded when police tried to stop him.
“He tried to fire at the police party with the intention of killing. Police retaliated in self-defence, and a bullet hit him in the right leg,” Shukla said.

The injured man identified himself as Brijesh, son of Dharmdev Prasad from Mohammadpur in Mau district. Police said he confessed that he and an associate had previously smuggled cows into Bihar for slaughter. A .315-bore rifle, ammunition, and a Splendour motorcycle were seized from the spot. Brijesh was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and later placed under arrest.

Bulandshahr: Murder Accused Arrested After Gunfight

In a separate incident on Thursday, police in Bulandshahr arrested a man named Salim after an exchange of gunfire. According to officials, Salim tried to flee during the police operation and opened fire at the team. He was injured in retaliatory firing and apprehended.

Police said Salim had allegedly kidnapped and murdered a young woman from another community. The woman was reported missing on November 28, and her body was discovered on Monday in the Walipura canal under Kotwali Nagar police station limits.

The accused was taken to a hospital for treatment before being taken into custody. Police also recovered the weapon used in the crime. An investigation remains underway
