Mumbai: The Maharashtra Police have dismissed suspended Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) Gopal Badane from service in connection with the Satara woman doctor suicide case, officials said on Tuesday. The action was taken by Special Inspector General (IG) of Police, Kolhapur Range, Sunil Phulari.
Earlier, the state government had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case, following directions from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The SIT, headed by IPS officer Tejaswi Satpute, has been instructed to begin the investigation immediately.
The case concerns the death of a woman doctor posted in Satara, who was found dead in a hotel room. A note written on her hand allegedly named PSI Gopal Badane and two others, accusing them of physical and mental harassment that drove her to suicide.
Badane and another accused, Prashant Bankar, were arrested by the Satara Police under charges of rape and abetment to suicide. The court had remanded Badane to police custody till October 30 after he was produced before the Additional District and Sessions Court in Phaltan on October 26.
Opposition parties have been demanding a high-level investigation into the incident and had earlier called for the arrest of former BJP MP Ranjeetsinh Naik Nimbalkar, son of former Shiv Sena MP Hindurao Naik Nimbalkar, in connection with the case.
Chief Minister Fadnavis assured that strict action would be taken against those found guilty and urged political parties not to politicize “such a sensitive issue.”
