Poonch: The Balnoi Battalion of the Indian Army’s Krishna Ghati Brigade organized a talent hunt competition for students to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the 1965 ‘Battle of Operation Hill’ — a significant victory fought along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district.

The event drew enthusiastic participation from students across remote and economically weaker areas of Mankote tehsil. Aimed at nurturing young talent, the programme provided students with a platform to showcase their abilities while honouring the courage and sacrifices of soldiers who fought in the historic battle.

Imtiaz Waseem Hashmi, Principal of Mankote School, lauded the initiative, saying,

“A spectacular talent hunt was held here with children from two clusters within Mankote tehsil taking part. The competitions included painting, singing, and dancing. Despite limited resources, these children have immense talent. Such programmes will help them shine and bring pride to this region and the nation.”

The Battle of Operation Hill, fought from November 2–3, 1965, in the Mendhar-Balnoi sector, was a crucial engagement between Indian and Pakistani forces following the 1965 war.

Earlier this year, on August 20, the Balnoi Battalion celebrated Diwali with civilians along the LoC in the Balnoi-Mendhar sector, strengthening the bond between the Army and local residents. The celebrations included cultural exchanges and morale-boosting interactions, with Army families and students participating.

A student expressed gratitude to the Indian Army, saying,

“The Army has provided us with several facilities and courses. Today, we are also celebrating Diwali with them. It feels special.”

Through such initiatives, the Indian Army continues to foster community engagement, promote local talent, and honour the legacy of bravery associated with the Battle of Operation Hill.
