Ayodhya: Thousands of devotees gathered at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya on Sunday to take part in the grand Diwali celebrations, ahead of the main festival on Monday. The holy city is hosting its much-anticipated Deepotsav, a spectacular festival marking the return of Lord Shri Ram to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile.

As part of the celebrations, a record-breaking 26,11,101 earthen lamps (diyas) will be lit along Ram Ki Paidi and 56 ghats, transforming Ayodhya into a glowing canvas of devotion and joy. The dazzling spectacle is set to highlight Ayodhya’s spiritual and cultural legacy on the global stage.

Diwali commemorates Lord Ram’s victorious return after defeating the demon king Ravana and rescuing Mata Sita. Residents of Ayodhya welcomed him by illuminating the city with lamps—a tradition that continues today as a symbol of the triumph of good over evil.

In preparation, homes and temples across the city have been cleaned and decorated with vibrant rangolis and flowers. Devotees have begun ritual baths and prayers, as the festive spirit fills the air.

This year’s Deepotsav, held under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is being organized on an unprecedented scale. Over 10,000 volunteers, including students from universities and colleges, are involved in lighting the diyas. Preparation began early Sunday morning with volunteers placing wicks and oil in the lamps, which will be lit in the evening.

To ensure the accuracy of the lamp count, the diyas are being arranged in specific patterns, and a structured tracking system using QR codes is in place for participants, as explained by Guinness World Records adjudicator Richard Stenning. The event is poised to break last year’s world record for the most oil lamps lit simultaneously at a single location.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Police have ramped up security, conducting continuous inspections across Ayodhya to ensure a safe and peaceful celebration.

This year’s Deepotsav reaffirms Ayodhya’s rising stature as a global hub of spirituality and tourism, bringing together faith, culture, and unity in a radiant display of devotion to Lord Shri Ram.
