The Aryavarth Express

New Delhi: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is set to assume responsibility for the security of the Vice President of India, providing a ‘Z+’ category cover, sources have confirmed.

Following a fresh threat assessment by the Intelligence Bureau, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has verbally directed the CRPF—one of India’s Central Armed Police Forces—to take over close protection duties for the country’s second-highest constitutional office. While a formal written order is still awaited, the transition may take place as early as today (Wednesday), according to sources.

Under this revised security arrangement, CRPF’s specially trained commandos from its VIP security wing will be tasked with the Vice President’s immediate protection. These personnel are equipped with advanced training in counter-terror tactics, close combat, high-threat response, and evacuation procedures.

The ‘Z+’ category is among the highest levels of security in the country, typically involving the deployment of over 55 armed personnel, along with escort vehicles and support staff.

While the CRPF will handle close proximity security, the Delhi Police will continue to manage access control, outer perimeter duties, and the outer security cordon, forming a layered security grid.

This change is part of a broader alignment with the updated Blue Book guidelines—India’s comprehensive security manual for top constitutional functionaries. The CRPF already provides security to several high-risk dignitaries acrossthe country and is being brought in to ensure enhanced protection for the Vice President based on the latest threat evaluations.

The move highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to reinforce the security apparatus for key officials in response to evolving threat perceptions.
