New Delhi: The Monsoon Session of Parliament kicks off today and is expected to witness heated debates, as the Opposition INDIA bloc prepares to challenge the Narendra Modi-led government on a host of pressing issues. These include the recent Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, the Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR), and the crash of Air India flight AI 171.

This marks the first session since Operation Sindoor, India’s precision strike on terror camps launched in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives. The Opposition is set to demand accountability and justice for the victims while also pressing the government for transparency on the operation and its aftermath. The session is further expected to raise questions over former U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial claims about brokering peace between India and Pakistan during the operation.

Aviation safety is also likely to dominate proceedings, especially in the wake of the AI 171 crash. Lawmakers are set to raise serious concerns about airline safety standards, inspection protocols for Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and the regulatory oversight of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha has submitted questions to the Civil Aviation Minister regarding safety audits by the DGCA over the past three years, the number of irregularities found, and the actions taken against non-compliant airlines. AAP MP Sandeep Kumar Pathak has also raised concerns on passenger safety, while BJP MP Ashokrao Chavan has requested data on Dreamliner aircraft inspections, specifically relating to the model involved in the AI 171 crash.

In legislative business, several Union Ministers, including Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Jayant Chaudhary, are expected to table papers from their respective ministries in the Lok Sabha. MP Supriya Sule will present the Report of the Select Committee on the Income Tax Bill, 2025, along with related evidence records.

Among key bills listed, the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2024, will be moved for consideration and passage by Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.

The session will also see discussion on a resolution for extending President’s Rule in Manipur, which has been in effect since February 13, 2025, under Article 356(1) of the Constitution.

Parliament will pay tribute to its former members with obituary references, while the Rajya Sabha will also extend birthday greetings to Leader of Opposition and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.

The Monsoon Session 2025 will run until August 21, with a break from August 12 to 18. It includes 21 sittings over 32 days, with 17 key items scheduled for discussion, according to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.
