New Delhi, June 5, 2025: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a press release by the Press Club of India, raising serious concerns over the alleged brutal assault of two journalists by police personnel in Bhind district, Madhya Pradesh.

The incident reportedly occurred on May 1, 2025, under the supervision of the District Superintendent of Police. In a post on social media platform X, the NHRC confirmed that it has taken note of the incident, citing potential human rights violations.

The Commission has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Madhya Pradesh, demanding a comprehensive report within two weeks. It emphasised that the allegations—if proven true—point to a grave infringement on press freedom and fundamental rights.

The press release, dated May 25, 2025, claims the journalists were not only assaulted but were also coerced into recording a video stating that the matter had been resolved. This has raised additional concerns regarding intimidation and forced statements.

In a related development, the Supreme Court on Wednesday sought a response from the Madhya Pradesh government on a petition filed by the assaulted journalists. The duo allege they were targeted and beaten inside a police station for reporting on illegal sand mining activities in the region.

Furthermore, on May 28, the Delhi High Court granted protection to one of the journalists, who claimed his life was in danger due to threats allegedly made by the Bhind Superintendent of Police following the incident.

The case has sparked national debate about press freedom and the safety of journalists reporting on sensitive issues.
