Lucknow: Congress MP Pramod Tiwari on Monday expressed strong reservations over the announcement of a ceasefire understanding between India and Pakistan coming from the United States, rather than New Delhi. He emphasized that a nation as powerful as India should take the lead in communicating such developments.
“We are proud of our army, which is the best in the world and capable of defending the sovereignty and integrity of the country. If needed, it can strike the enemy in their own territory,” Tiwari said. “It is painful that the announcement of the understanding between India and Pakistan came from the President of the United States. This message should have come from New Delhi, not from Washington.”
The remarks came after the U.S. State Department welcomed the understanding reached between India and Pakistan on the cessation of hostilities. The department praised both nations’ leadership for choosing the path of peace, commending Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif for their “wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship”.
President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were also cited as continuing to urge both countries to maintain a complete ceasefire and engage in direct dialogue. The U.S. reiterated its support for facilitating future discussions aimed at preventing conflict.
Tiwari also called for a special session of Parliament to honour the bravery of Indian soldiers and to discuss the developments in full. “A special session should be convened to salute our brave soldiers and to have a comprehensive discussion in the House,” he said.
The recent diplomatic move follows Operation Sindoor, launched by India on May 7 in retaliation for a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed the lives of 26 tourists. The operation targeted multiple terror sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir.
