New Delhi: Border Security Force (BSF) Director General Daljit Chaudhary met Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan on Friday to brief him on the ongoing situation following the detention of BSF constable Purab Kumar Shaw by Pakistan Rangers.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Home Affairs in North Block, lasted for over 30 minutes. It comes in the wake of a concerning incident near Punjab’s Ferozepur sector, where Constable Shaw accidentally crossed the international border while providing security to local farmers on Wednesday.

Shaw, who was in uniform and armed with his service rifle, reportedly moved ahead of the group to rest in a shaded area, inadvertently stepping into Pakistani territory. He was subsequently apprehended by Pakistan Rangers.

Authorities confirmed that three flag meetings have been conducted between the BSF and Pakistan Rangers to negotiate Shaw’s release, but the discussions have so far remained inconclusive.

Officials emphasised that while such incidents are not unprecedented along the India-Pakistan border, this one comes amid heightened tensions following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. The April 22 attack claimed the lives of 26 tourists and prompted India to take strong retaliatory measures against Pakistan for its alleged support of cross-border terrorism.

The BSF, which is tasked with securing the 3,323 km long India-Pakistan border across Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, continues to monitor the situation closely. The border remains one of the most sensitive and volatile in the region due to ongoing security and diplomatic challenges.
