New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of four senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers as Members of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), according to an official order issued on Thursday.

The newly appointed members are:

Pankaj Kumar Mishra, who previously served as Member (Finance) of the Atomic Energy Commission.

Sanjay Bahadur, who held the position of Principal Director General of Income Tax (Training), New Delhi.

L. Rajasekhar Reddy, who served as the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (TDS) for the Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry regions.

Ms G. Aparna Rao, who was the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax-1 for the Bengaluru, Karnataka, and Goa regions.

All four officers belong to the 1989 batch of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax).

These appointments come at a crucial juncture as the CBDT, the apex policy-making body for direct tax administration in India, looks to strengthen tax compliance, broaden the tax base, and push forward several pending reform initiatives.

A senior Finance Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, remarked, “These appointments bring valuable expertise to the Board at a time when enhancing tax governance and improving taxpayer services are top priorities.”

The appointments were formalised through an order by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT).

Earlier, on March 17, the CBDT reported a 16.15% year-on-year growth in direct tax collections, which reached ₹25.86 lakh crore as of March 16, 2025, for the financial year 2024-25. This robust performance was driven by a significant increase in both corporate and non-corporate tax revenues, along with a sharp rise in securities transaction tax (STT) collections.

Corporate tax revenue climbed to ₹12.40 lakh crore, up from ₹10.1 lakh crore in the previous fiscal year, while non-corporate tax revenue rose to ₹12.90 lakh crore from ₹10.91 lakh crore.
